Dr. Mohammad Asif Khan is currently appointed as the Director of the Perdana University Centre for Bioinformatics (PU-CBi), Malaysia, Acting Dean of the Perdana University School of Data Sciences (PU-SDS), and Visiting Scientist for the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM), USA. He founded and established the PU-CBi in May 2014 and later PU-SDS in May 2015, which subsumed the existing Centre for Bioinformatics (PU-CBi) and saw the formation of a new Centre for Computing. His research interests are in the area of biological data warehousing and applications of bioinformatics to the study of immune responses, vaccines, venom toxins, drug design, and disease biomarkers.

He first published a scientific article during his undergraduate (BSc) honours year (2003) and to date (2016), he has authored/co-authored more than 40 international, peer-reviewed research and review articles in various international journals, books and conferences, and presented his work at numerous international conferences. He was involved in the development of several novel bioinformatics methodologies, tools, and specialized databases, and currently has three patent applications granted.

His teaching experiences (2006-2016) have been in bioinformatics, imparting to undergraduate/postgraduate students at the National University of Singapore (~1500 students over the years) and to medical and bioinformatics students at Perdana University (~80 students); and has assisted in the supervision of research projects of more than 50 students (45 bachelors, 3 masters and 5 PhDs). He is currently formally supervising four MSc (Bioinformatics) students and one PhD student at Perdana University. His publications include three peer-reviewed journal articles and two book chapters on bioinformatics education. He has led the curriculum development of a unique Postgraduate Diploma in Bioinformatics programme (http://bit.ly/10T5FfX) and an MSc (Bioinformatics) programme (by Research) (http://bit.ly/Zf8syP) at Perdana University, with the aim of providing students the foundation necessary to manage and mine the wealth of available biological data for knowledge discovery.

He is currently an ExCo member and Vice President (Corporate) of the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNET); he is also a Honorary Director of APBioNET Limited (LTD). His services to the scientific community include as a reviewer for several journals, conferences, and funding agencies, and has donned various important roles in the organization of several local and international bioinformatics conferences, meetings and workshops.
