Promoting Excellence in Research: Successful Completion of the "Aseptic Surgery for Researchers" Workshop

Bertam, Penang – 25 June 2025 – The Animal Research Section of the Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI), Universiti Sains Malaysia, proudly hosted a one-and-a-half-day workshop titled “Aseptic Surgery for Researchers”, aimed at enhancing the quality and ethical standards of surgical procedures involving laboratory animals.

Held from 24 to 25 June 2025, this hands-on workshop brought together researchers, postgraduate students, and technical personnel from the IPPT research community. The program emphasized the crucial importance of aseptic techniques in safeguarding animal welfare and ensuring the integrity of scientific data.

The primary objectives of the workshop were to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of aseptic surgical procedures in laboratory animal models and to equip them with the skills needed to prepare and maintain sterile surgical instruments.

Participants engaged in a combination of theoretical and practical sessions designed to develop competence and confidence in performing surgeries under strict aseptic conditions. The sessions were led by a multidisciplinary team of expert facilitators, including a surgeon, veterinarian, researcher, and personnel from the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD), who shared their knowledge and best practices.
By the end of the workshop, attendees had gained a clear understanding of their responsibilities in ensuring surgical sterility and acquired hands-on skills to perform aseptic techniques effectively during surgery.

This initiative underscores AMDI’s ongoing commitment to promoting responsible and high-standard research practices. Feedback from participants reflected the workshop’s effectiveness in bridging theoretical concepts with practical applications, ultimately contributing to improved animal care and research outcomes.

The Animal Research Section extends its sincere appreciation to all participants, facilitators, and supporting staff for their invaluable contributions to the success of this meaningful program.
