Infectious Control
The infection control unit plays an important role in creating awareness about how to prevent and control nosocomial infections among AMDI staff. This is to ensure that the patients are receiving the best treatment in accordance to infection guidelines. There are four staff including a Specialist who serves as the Penyelaras Kawalan Jangkitan, seorang Penyelia Jururawat U36, seorang Jururawat U32 (KUP) dan seorang Jururawat U29 yang bertindak sebagai Jururawat Kawalan Jangkitan.

1. To provide infection control services in AMDI.
2. To improve quality of life of patients and to reduce nosocomial infection risk.
2.1 To take proper precautions to control for infection.
2.2 To provide health education to staff, patients and the public.
2.3 To ensure that the infection control policy is up-to-date.
2.4 To make sure than the surveillance and notification system is always adhered to.
3. To make sure that each staff follows the infection control guidelines (HUSM & KKM).
4. To make sure that each staff follows the 'Standard Precaution' to prevent infection.
5. To improve the quality of infection control services by providing awareness and training related to infection to staff and support staff.

Ward visitation
Routine visits to the wards to ensure that guidelines under the infection control is being adhered to.
Data collection
a. Collect and record data such as MRSA, MRO, ESBL, location of infection, cause of infection and others.
b. Prepare documents accordingly.
Environmental Swabbing
a. Environmental swab at wards with outbreaks
b. Prepare a full report related to the environmental swab.
c. Repear environmental swab if necessary.
d. Environmental swabbing of instruments and surroundings to identify cause of infection.
Education
a. Guide and advice related to Standard Precaution to staff in the wards.
b. Lecture or discussion about environmental cleanliess to the public.
c. Constructive criticism if there is a conflict related to following the Infection Control Policy.
Meeting
a. Hold a Infection Control meeting every 4 months.
b. Present the infection control reports at the management and clinical meetings.
c. Discussions with link nurse if necessary.
Monitoring
Monitoring all the clinical units for:
• Cleanliness and safety.
• Clinical and sharps waste.
• Hand hygiene prior to procedures, dealing with patients, or handling instruments.
• PPE usage while handling infection cases, oral treatment, collection of blood and during chemotherapy.
• Lotion and medication storage, as well as expiration date.
• Investigate needle prick incidents, blood or bodily fluid exposure.

Training
Hand Hygiene is a simple but crucial procedure to reduce nosocomial infection among patients and staff. As of today, six Hand Hygiene workshops have been conducted.
Monitoring Nosocomial Infections
Nosocomial infection is when an infection happens 48 hours after being admitted into the hospital or 2 weeks after being discharged. Nosocomial surveillance is typically done after the infection control’s nurses visit to a particular ward based on laboratory results.
MRSA Surveillance
MRSA, which stands for methecillin resistant staphylococcus aureus is one of the causes of infection in hospitals. MRSA is resistant to common antibiotics such Cloxacillin, Erythromycin dan Cephalosporin.
Hepatitis B Immunization
Immunization is offered to all clinical staff once every five years. The hepatitis B status will also be obtained from new staff. Staff who do not exhibit antinody for Hepatitis B will be provided with the vaccine. A safe level is > 10 MIU/m
Environmental Audit
This audit is conducted in all wards, including the operation theaters and the CSSD to ensure that there is good infection control practice. Other items looked at are sterile instrument storage, proper ventilation and standard precautions.
In Use Test / Air Sampling
In use test is conducted in the event of an outbreak, for example, solutions or dressings used would be tested. Air sampling on the other hand is done whenever there is renovation, especially involving air conditioning.
