IPPT PRODUCED INAUGURAL GRADUATES IN CLINICAL EXERCISE SCIENCE

Konvokesyen 56

Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) has successfully produced eight 'Inaugural Graduates' in Master of Science (Clinical Exercise Science). The Master Program in Clinical Exercise Science is the first program offered in Malaysia that aims to produce trained professionals in implementing a healthy lifestyle intervention program involving exercise, nutrition and psychology.

This Master's program is in line with overseas program such as in the United States and Europe offering Master’s program of 'Clinical Exercise Science' or also known as Master’s Program of 'Clinical Training Physiology'. In addition, graduates from the Master of Science (Clinical Exercise Science) program meet the requirements of professional and health related professionals as required by both Public and Private Sectors in Malaysia. The need for these professionals work force is in line with Malaysia's mission to reduce the rate of Non-Communicable Diseases and improve the quality of health services.

The course content in this Master’s program fulfils the accreditation features set by the Australian Science Sports Game (ESSA). It is further complemented by an emphasis on the combination of theoretical and practical aspects in filling courses. This approach is taken to ensure that students will apply the theory to practical elements to help them carry out their duties more effectively.

Implementation of Master Program in Clinical Exercise Science also involves clinical placements for 10 weeks at Pantai Integrated Rehab Sdn Bhd, Kuala Lumpur. This Clinical Placement is implemented through the Memorandum of Agreement aimed in enhancing their clinical and skills in interprofessional training.

{slider=IPPT PHD CANDIDATE WON THE BEST ORAL PRESENTATION IN 25th CONGRESS OF THE OBSTETRICAL & GYNAECOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALAYSIA}

BERTAM, July 28, 2017: RNA-Bio Research group of Infectomic Cluster, IPPT, attended 25th Congress of the Obstetrical & Gynaecological Society of Malaysia, held in Kuala Lumpur recently. IPPT PhD candidate, Ang Kai Cheen, presented her PhD finding in oral presentation entitled “Evaluation of M2/ANXA5 Haplotype as Repeated Spontaneous Abortions Risk Factor in the Malaysian Malay Population”, while their collaborator, Dr Anna Liza Roslani, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, now at Kuantan Medical Centre, presented a case study entitled “Intervention of Low-Molecular-Weight Heparin in M2/ANXA5 Haplotype Carriers: A Case Report in Pregnancy”.

Repeated Spontaneous Abortions (RSA) is a major topic in reproductive medicine, affecting 1/20 pregnant woman worldwide. It has an adverse psychosocial impact in women and their families. The incidence of RSA is relatively high among the Malay population of Malaysia. Conventional hereditary thrombophilia factors have been generally ruled out. The group evaluated a new predisposition thrombophilia factor, M2/ANXA5 (RPRGL3). The carrier rate of M2/ANXA5 for the general Malay population was 42.2 % with an elevated RSA risk (OR=1.53) specifically for early fetal losses (gestational weeks ≤ 15). Exceeding copy numbers of M2/ANXA5 alleles seemed to contribute a higher risk in RSA couples especially when both partners were M2 carriers. They confirmed the role of M2/ANXA5 as a genetically associated thrombophilia predisposition factor for RSA among ethnic Malay of Malaysia. Dr. Anna Liza presented a case-report study showing that an intervention with low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) could be a successful anticoagulant treatment for M2/ANXA5 carriers with RSA, rendering healthy pregnancy outcome. They proposed the necessary screening of M2/ANXA5 haplotype for two reasons:

  1. To assess the risk of having repeated spontaneous abortion
  2. It could lead to preventive intervention – anticoagulant (low-molecular-weight-heparin) treatment

Congratulation to Ang KC for wining the best oral presentation in the congress. The project was funded under USM RU grant no: 1001/CIPPT/812100. The financial support from Institute Postgraduate Studies, USM and MyBrain15 program from Ministry of Education were acknowledged.

Future collaborative efforts are in the pipeline between PPSP and IPPT in various aspects of clinical services to add values to the existing areas and to forge new ventures where both parties will be able to complement each other.

Further discussion on academic appointments (lantikan silang), support for academic programmes, optimization of resources in diagnostic laboratories and sharing of teaching materials were also conducted in a very positive discourse. Existing research collaboration may be enhanced when researchers from both PTJs are engaged in a favourable and stimulating scientific communication in the future.

The visit ended on a high positive note with a short walk around CTC facilities. We hope this will be the first among many discussions to strengthen the cooperation between IPPT and other PTJs of Health Campus, USM.
