Esssential oil of rhizome contained: sabinene, terpinen-4-ol & DMPBD ((E)-1(3,4-dimethylphenyl)butadiene). The rhizome contained curcuminoids such as cassumunins A, B, C. Phenylbutenoid, Zerumbone.

Native of Mexico.

Woody shrub growing to 4 m. Flowers are pale yellow to white, open at night and stay fragrant until sunrise.

 Steroidal glycosides in leaves. Flavonol glycosides & steroidal saponines. Spirostanol glycoside from leaves. Steroidal saponins & alkaloids (Bahman N. et al 2007).

Antidiabetic Activity

Oral administration of the hydroalcoholic solution leaves extracts in for 15 days caused a significant (P<0.01) reduction in blood glucose levels in diabetic rats (Kamboj A. et al.,2013).

Leaves and berries. The unripe berries contain solanine while the ripe berries has the anticholinergic glycoside toxins. The leaves contains atropine-like anticholinergic alkaloids.
