Siew Kit was sponsored by the Malaysian government (JPA) to pursue his studies in University of Cambridge, UK. He was also appointed as a Cambridge Commonwealth Trust fellow (honorary) for his undergraduate studies and completed his bachelor degree in Biochemistry in 2009. He subsequently obtained an offer from the Department of Biochemistry, University of Cambridge for his PhD studies, which he took up with a scholarship from the Ministry of Higher Education and Universiti Sains Malaysia (ASTS/SLAI). He graduated in 2014 based on his work in elucidating the role of Z-DNA binding domain for localization to stress granules during oxidative stress. Siew Kit is now working as a senior lecturer in Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia. His current research interest is to understand the cellular mechanism and effect of H2 on oxidative stress and apoptosis induced by chemicals or drugs.

Cheong Hwa holds a BSportSci (Hons) from the University of Malaya and a MSc in Sports Science from Universiti Sains Malaysia. He was awarded Academic Staff Training Scheme Fellowship from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2010 and completed a PhD in Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Sydney, Australia in 2014. He joined the Lifestyle Science Cluster of Advanced Medical and Dental Institute, Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2015. Previously, he worked with the National Sports Institute of Malaysia, at Bukit Jalil for over 6 years as an exercise physiologist. Besides academic pursuits, Cheong Hwa’s favourite pastimes are training and competing in sports such as marathon and road cycling, as well as badminton.

Cheong Hwa’s current research interest is centred around understanding the role of heat shock response and acquired thermotolerance in exercise performance, health maintenance and clinical rehabilitation of disease states (i.e. non-communicable disease). Through animal model and human experimental trial, he investigates the function of heat shock proteins in skeletal muscle, its practical implication in physical performance or occupational pursuits in the extreme environments, and its therapeutic value against various stressful and pathophysiological conditions. By using a combination of biochemical and physiological research techniques, he is currently working on elucidating the functional role of HSP70 in eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage. In a more translational direction, he is investigating the cross-protective effect of HSP70 against performance impairment in the heat and exercise intolerance in the specific populations (e.g. obese, sedentary, the elderly). He is also interested in studying the utility of eccentric exercise as a means of inducing skeletal muscle heat shock response, and its efficacy in maintaining muscle functional capacity as well as reversing muscle wasting associated with prolonged bed rest or ageing.
