BRACHYTHERAPY FELLOWSHIP/ CLINICAL ATTACHMENT at PPUSMB

Fellowship / clinical attachment is a method of lifelong learning in medicine related profession. Many universities and center in Malaysia and around the world provide either fellowship or clinical attachment in certain area especially in rare or subspecialty area.

Malaysian Brachytherapy Society in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia is offering Clinical Attachment (observer-ship and hands-on) and fellowship program in clinical brachytherapy and brachytherapy physics for radiation oncologist/radiation oncology trainees, medical physicist, medical doctor and allied health sciences staff who are keen to advance their knowledge in the clinical application of brachytherapy and brachytherapy physics.

Offered program are:

Clinical attachment (observership) for 4weeks to 12weeks duration. This program open to all allied health sciences staff (nurses, medical assistant, radiographer and etc) and medical doctor. During this program, student will observe and learn the basic of brachytherapy procedure and the physics behind it.

Clinical attachment (hands-on) for 6months duration. This program open for clinician and medical physics officer. During this program, student will observe, assist and performed various kind of brachytherapy procedure and learn the basic of brachytherapy and medical physics in brachytherapy.

PPUSMB Clinical brachytherapy and PPUSMB brachytherapy Physic fellowship is a structured program that open for certified clinician in oncology or trainees in oncology and medical physic officer. It is a program with minimum 12months attachment or maximum 24months attachment. Trainees will observe, assist, perform and participate in brachytherapy treatment of a patient. Student will in the end have confident and certified to performed brachytherapy on their own.

Qualifications

a. Medical - MD, MBBS or equibalent
b. Health Science - relevant degree in Health Science
c. Nursing - Diploma in Nursing

English Proficiency

a. MUET, IELTS, SAT any equivalent English test minimum compentency (following Institute of Postgraduate, Universiti Sains Malaysia requirement)

- A minimum score of 35 for TOEFL (Internet-based);or
- A minimum of Band 5 for IELTS; or
- A minimum score of 36 for PTE; or
- A minimum score of 154 for CAE/CPE; or
- A minimum of Band 2 for MUET

C. Health status

- General medical check up
- Vaccination

Passport and VISA

a. Working VISA application for clinical attachment more than 3 months/120 days.
b. Application shall be made by applicant at their repective Malaysian embassy after the acceptance of offer letter by PPUSM

Follow each fellowship/ clinical attachment (hands-on) requirement :

The entry criteria for the PPUSMB Clinical Brachytherapy Fellowship training are:
- Qualified radiation oncologist or equivalent qualification.
- Medical doctors undergoing training to become specialist in radiation oncology or its equivalent.
- Basic medical qualification that is eligible for full or provisional registration with Malaysian Medical Council.
- For clinical attachment (hands-on), student shall apply for temporary MMC and get its approval before starting their clinical attachment (hands-on)
- Students should present their proof of funding or a scholarship because this fellowship does not come with financial aid.

The entry criteria for the PPUSMB Brachytherapy Physics Fellowship training are:
- Minimum of Degree in Medical Physics, Medical radiation or master’s degree in physics or related field with Medical Physics training and/or experience is required.
- Students should present their proof of funding or a scholarship because this fellowship does not come with financial aid.

Fees

General fees
- Form processing fees – RM 100

Temporary MMC fees non-work permit holder – 6 months RM 1,500, 1 year RM 2,500

Bank guarantee for India, Bangladesh, China, African continent – 500 USD

Specific fees

- Follow each fellowship program fees (12 months – 24 months)
- Malaysian citizen/work permit holder: RM 8,000.00 every 6 months (RM16000.00 per year)
- non-Malaysian citizen/non-work permit holder: USD 3,000.00 every
6 months (USD6000.00 per year)

Clinical attachment (observer-ship) (4weeks – 12weeks program)

Malaysian citizen/work permit holder:
- Nurses / Allied health     : RM400/ week
- Medical Officer                 : RM500/ week
- Specialist                             : RM600/ week

non-Malaysian citizen/non-work permit holder:
- USD 3,000.00 semi-yearly
- Nurses/ Allied health      : USD 100.00/ week
- Medical Officer              : USD 150.00/ week
- Specialist                      : USD 200.00/ week

Intake

- Fellowship and clinical attachment (hands-on): January and July each year
- Clinical Attachment: throughout the year

Clinical Brachytherapy Fellowship and Brachytherapy Physics Fellowship is offered for a period of minimum 12 months or maximum 24 months.

Specific requirement
Follow each fellowship requirement (as follow)
Part 1:
- Candidates are required to pass the brachytherapy physics exam that test understanding of the fundamentals of brachytherapy physics.

- MBS-USM Brachytherapy Physics Fellowship candidates needs to perform/assist in a wide range of brachytherapy physics procedures (recorded and validated by supervisor in a logbook) as follows:

- liver brachytherapy (15) – 5 assists, 10 perform
- oesophageal brachytherapy (5) - 2 assists, 3 perform
- tongue/head and neck brachytherapy (7) – 2 assists, 5 perform
- pelvic recurrence brachytherapy (5) – 2 assists, 3 perform
- prostate brachytherapy (3) – 1 asisst, 2 perform
- interstitial gynae brachytherapy (5) – 2 assists, 3 perform
- others (10) – 5 assists, 5 perform

Part 2:
Candidates are required to publish at least 2 papers in citation indexed journals for brachytherapy subject matter, with at least one in ISI (web of science) indexed journal

- interstitial gynae brachytherapy (3) – 1 observe, 1 assist, 1 perform
- others (6) - 2 observe, 2 assists, 2 perform

Clinical attachment (observer-ship)
- Clinical hours of attachment (25hour a week)
- Logbook of observation (liver brachytherapy, head/neck and tongue brachytherapy, others brachytherapy)

Certification will be awarded by PPUSMB-IPPT
- Upon completion of the training and fulfilling ALL the training criteria, student will be given the PPUSMB-IPPT Clinical Brachytherapy or PPUSMB-IPPT Brachytherapy Physics fellowship certificate.
- Upon completed the clinical attachment, student will be awarded with certificate of completed clinical attachment by PPUSMB-IPPT
