BERTAM, 21 February 2017- Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (AMDI) of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) strengthened its commitment in raising quality by introducing and implementing the 5S practice at its Animal Research Centre (ARC) today.

AMDI was previously accredited for 5S Practice by the Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) for its Clinical Trial Complex (CTC). Recognising the importance of good clinical practice including 5S, AMDI took the initiative to expand the practice by implementing it in the Animal Research Complex.

The launching ceremony of 5S practice was officiated by AMDI Director Dr. Norehan Mokhtar at the ARC, where she reminded everyone about the importance of the 5S practice.

"5S practice focuses on 5 main activities which are Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain. In accordance with AMDI’s emphasis on excellence, this practice encourages positivity, enhances creativity and innovation, and fosters teamwork among staff.

In addition to that, the practice of 5S will also encourage staff to create a better working environment that is safe, clean and tidy, ultimately contributing to improvement in productivity and delivery of good service. She added that the practice of 5S is also a long-term investment to ensure AMDI will remain strong when faced with any challenges and at the same time build its reputation as a model institution among government agencies.

She also added that continuous commitment from the staff is needed to achieve the goal of 5S accreditation by July 2017. Each of the 5S component implementation will be monitored and assessed by the accreditation board thus cooperation from everyone involved is needed to ensure AMDI’s accreditation. She also congratulated the ARC’s 5S/QE committee, headed by Mr. Mohamad Basir Abdullah for taking the initiative to implement 5S practices.

Professor Dr. Narazah Mohd Yusoff, the Deputy Director of Division of Research & Networking who is also the 5S/QE committee’s advisor, ARC’s Head of Clusters, and other staff also attended the ceremony.
