Admission to Postgraduate @ AMDI

Masters of Science programs

Registration is open for our Masters of Science programs; Mixed mode (MM) and coursework (CW) for September intake each year:

1. Medical Research (MM)
2. Transfusion Science (MM)
3. Health Toxicology (MM)
4. Clinical Exercise Science (CW)

All programs carry 40/41 credit units and are conducted over 1 year (2 semesters and the long holidays). MM programs are 50% taught courses and 50% research, while a short project, clinical attachment and taught modules are the mainstay of the Clinical Exercise Science program.

Registration is also open the whole year through for our research mode programs (MSc and PhD) in various medical, dental and health research areas.

To speed up the application process please apply online through our Admission@USM website. Please refer to Postgraduate Programmes Booklet and IPS Postgraduate Handbook for details.

Applications for postgraduate studies are open throughtout the year with no closing dates but there are still cut-off date for coursework (CW) and mixed mode (MM) programmes which are as below:

1st Semester  (September Intake only) - 15 July (local candidates) / 15 June (international candidates)

It is important to check the cut-off date for the chosen programme. Applications received before the cut-off date will be processed promptly, whereas applications received after the cut-off date will be processed for the next intake.

For research mode programme, application and registration can be anytime throughtout the year.



Applicants should possess one of the following:

Master Degree

Qualification: Bachelor degree (Honours)

A) CGPA of at least 2.75
    BDS degree or DDS degree or BSc.(Honours) degree in related fields. 

OR,
B) CGPA of 2.5 - 2.74

  1. Research experience – 1 year; OR,
  2. Professional experience in related field- 1 year; OR,
  3. Two (2) academic publications (journals, not proceeding(s) in related field; OR,
  4. Grade B for major/ elective courses; OR,
  5. Grade B+ for final year project;

OR,
C) CGPA of 2.00 - 2.49

  1. Research experience - 5 years or professional experience in related field - 5 years, AND

  2. Two (2) academic publications (journal, not proceeding(s) in related field; OR,
  3. Grade B+ for major / elective courses; OR,
  4. Grade A- for final year project.


Doctor of Philosophy

I. Qualification: Master degree (Coursework or Mixed Mode)

A) CGPA of at least 3.00;

OR,
B) CGPA of 2.75 - 2.99

  1. Research experience – 2 years; OR,
  2. Professional experience in related field – 2 years; OR,
  3. Two (2) academic publications (journals, not proceedings) in the field applied; OR,
  4. Grade B+ for major/elective courses; OR,
  5. Grade B+ for Coursework Mode or P for Mixed Mode dissertation/project; 

OR,
C) CGPA of 2.5 - 2.74

  1. Research experience – 2 years OR professional experience in related field – 2 years; AND,

  2. Two (2) academic publications (journals, not proceedings) in the field applied for; OR,
  3. Grade A- for major/elective courses; OR,
  4. Grade A for Coursework Mode or P for Mixed Mode dissertation/project;

OR,
II. Qualification: Master degree (Research Mode)


Fast Track PhD

Qualification:
Bachelor degree first class honours

OR,
CGPA of at least 3.67

In addition to the above criteria, an applicant of Fast Tract PhD will be evaluated in an interview on the overall picture s/he presents to the AMDI Admissions Committee.

(Applicable for International Applicants Only) 

1. Prior to registration, a high level of English language proficiency is required to ensure that students derive better benefits from the programmes and syllabus provided. 
Evidence of English language proficiency must be submitted together with your application forms. For international students the following English Langguage Proficiency is required as an admission requirement: 

~ TOEFL: minimum score 80 (Internet-Based) or 213 (Computer-Based) or 550 (Paper-Based); OR 
~ IELTS: minimum Band 6.0; OR
~ English is the candidate's mother tongue or National Langguage; OR
~ Malaysian University English Test (MUET): minimum score Band 4.0; OR
~ Candidate graduated from an institution of Higher Learning in which the medium of instruction at
   Bachelor or Masters level is English; OR
~ English courses offered by British Council. (the level of qualification and the relavant courses are
   to be identified by the University Postgraduate Studies Council); OR
~ English courses offered by School of Language, Literacies and Tanslation. (the level of
   qualification and the relavant courses are to be identified by the University Postgraduate Studies
   Council); OR 
~ English courses from selected Malaysian public/private university or institution. (the level of
   qualification and the relavant courses are to be identified by the University Postgraduate Studies
   Council)

2. Prior to graduation, the Bahasa Malaysia (LKM 100) a one semester course is compulsory for all international students and must be taken and passed prior to graduation.The requirement pass grade is C. Registration for this course can be made at the School of Languages, Literacies and Translation at the USM Main Campus (Penang Island) within the candidature period.


Master of Science (Research)

Full-time: Min 2 semesters / Max 6 semesters
Part-time: Min 4 semesters / Max 12 semesters (for Malaysian only)

PhD (Research)
Full-time: Min 4 semesters / Max 10 semesters
Part-time: Min 6 semesters / Max 15 semesters (for Malaysian only)

Master of Science (Mixed Mode/Course Work)
Full-time only: Min 2 semesters / Max 4 semesters

Master of Medical (Course Work)
Full-time only: Min 8 semesters / Max 14 semesters

In AMDI Library there are 25,000 collections available.

Clinical Trial Complex (CTC)
AMDI offers a comprehensive range of clinical services. Oncology, General Surgery, Paediatrics, Otorhinolaryngology, Opthalmology, Orthodontics and Prosthodontics are among the specialty services that are offered in order to cater to the needs of the community in the Northern Region of Peninsula of Malaysia. The Clinical Trial Complex is well-equipped with state-of-theart facilities and equipments for Advanced Diagnostic Imaging and Laboratory Testing and intervention such as radiation theraphy (EBRT, IMRT & Brachytheraphy) and chemotheraphy.

Animal Research Complex (ARC)
AMDI is equipped with facilities to conduct research in the fields of medicine and dentistry. The core activities of AMDI focuses in on the elements of advanced translational research. In order to achieve this, AMDI has the latest and most advanced research facilities. These top notch facilities include Laboratories, Animal Research Complex and Clinical Research Complex.
